A Vision of My Future

I have struggled with my weight for years. As a young child I was just "heavy", but as a pre-teen I ballooned up, and kept right on gaining. I weighed 217 pounds the day I graduated from high school. Two years later I was a 225 pound bride. Nine years after that I was a 335 pound new mother. March of 2005, I stepped on a scale for the first time in years, and it said 346.8. I was almost 350 pounds.

I think many obese people have a moment of clarity, when they realize there will be serious consequences to their weight. For me, it was February, 2004. I was pregnant with my second child, standing in a snowy cemetery, watching my Aunt Linda's graveside service. She and I were overweight, and on several occaisions had congratulated each other on our healthiness in spite of our weight. But when she started having complications, they came one right after another, and before we knew it, she was gone.

At my grandparent's house after the service, I listened quietly to my uncle's story of picking out the casket. The only available casket that would fit my aunt looked like a shoebox to him. They also could not bring her body to the church because the funeral home was afraid to move her too much, fearing the casket would not hold up.

I don't know exactly how much my aunt weighed at the end of her life. I do know she had trouble driving, she needed a car with a front seat with enough room for her and the steering wheel. I know the last time I saw her was Christmas, and it took her several minutes to get up the stairs, and she was winded when she made it. I also know it was a terrible tragedy for her husband and children to have to watch her eat herself to death.

In an attempt to ward of diabetes, to live a quality life, and watch my children grow up, I went to a Weight Watchers meeting in March of 2005. That was when I came face to face with my weight. It hasn't been easy. In fact, it's been 9 months and I've lost 45 pounds. But it is worth it, and I'm sticking to it this time. I have acheived more success than before with the addition of hypnotherapy.
